Litter happens all over the city, not just on city streets! There are school grounds, parks, open space, river shorelines, and parking lots that could use a good cleaning.
Businesses can chip in by cleaning their own properties and the streets or waterways nearby.
Individuals often want to pick up their own street, or organize a neighborhood clean-up. It is our experience that if a resident selects the date and time for a street clean-up, and lets their neighbors know about the event, they will be surprised at the number of people who join in. For individuals desiring to join a group, we will be posting information about any events open to the general public on this website as this information becomes available.
Groups can pick up streets, parks or riverways. Scouting groups may be interested in the Shelton Landkeeper patch, which is awarded at no cost to group who have conducted a substantial clean-up of City open space land managed by the Conservation Commission. The Shelton Open Space website has information about the Landkeeper patch program and a map showing all the open space properties in Shelton.
The Houstatonic and Far Mill Rivers have very serious litter problems. Clean-ups along the Housatonic should take place at low tide -- most of the garbage is located along the high tide strand line.
